THACKRAY BARN CONVERSION

We were approached by our client to assist with the sympathetic renovation of a Grade II listed barn, which has been owned by their family for three generations. The accommodation is made up of the main 17th-century barn structure along with several smaller buildings that had been added over time. One of the key goals was to create a more cohesive layout by linking these separate spaces to improve the overall flow and usability of the home. To achieve this, we constructed a glazed link structure, creating a light-filled connection between the existing buildings while maintaining the visual distinction of the original structures. A separate outbuilding was also converted to provide ancillary accommodation for guests, as well as a dedicated home gym for the family.

Our clients were keen to respect the building’s historic fabric while also incorporating modern renewable technologies, including of air source heating and photovoltaic panels, carefully positioned on the south-facing roof elevation to maximise energy efficiency without compromising the building’s appearance.

Size: 255m2

Duration: 40 weeks

Challenge: The building had fallen into a bad state of repair so needed underpinning to shore up the foundations, as well as a full set of new roof timbers.
